While hunkered down for Hurricane Sandy, G-LO and Company paid us a visit. Having been raised right, he did not come empty-handed. He had stocked up on a trip to the Foodery and brought over a bottle of the Ommegang’s Scythe and Sickle Harvest Ale and Green Flash’s Friendship Brew. This Black Saison is the second collaborative effort with Brasserie St-Feuillienon. I was looking forward to the bottle as I have had the Hop Head Red IPA, the Double Stout Black Ale and the Rayon Vert, plus, I was interested to see how one of my favorite styles (Black IPAs and Stouts) would blend with one of G-LO’s (he loves his Saisons).
Here is what Green Flash has to say about this beer:
Friendship Brew is a Black Saison that blends European and American hops, Belgian yeast and a cache of secret spices. The aroma and flavors are enticing, with delicate fruitiness, subtle spice and rounded roast malt characteristics. Bottle conditioning provides lively carbonation and rich beer foam for a luscious body and a lean, dry finish.
And here are my impressions of this beer…
- Appearance: Black with nice tan foam and good lacing.
- Aroma: Roasted malt, hay, and earth.
- Taste: Creamy and heavily roasted with some odd spices.
- ABV: 5.7%
I’m not sure if I missed something or not, but I found the Friendship Brew to be only okay. Of course, we did start off the day with a Ballast Point Indra Kunindra and that may have blown away my taste buds. Perhaps, this one is worth a second try.

Was way too anise flavored for my likes. Usually I’m a Green Flash fan.

Anise! That was the odd taste. Thanks for zeroing in on my quandary.

Agreed. This one didn’t stand a chance after the Indra Kunundra. Will have to buy it again and retry.
On a positive note… you and your Killer Wife are excellent hosts and we had a FABULOUS time! We’ll have to do that more often. Without the Hurricane of course.

Yeah the Kunundra may have created a conundrum. Also, you shouldn’t refer to she who must not be named as Killer. You wouldn’t like her when she gets angry.

Had it last week, a bit odd, I thought it was quite minty. Green flash is still one of my favorites though

Having had other Green Flash offerings, maybe I set the bar too high. This one was just missing something.
