It’s 1985. Los Angeles. It’s a gritty town where you find the grit in the grittiest of places. Yeah, there’s the Hollywood fluff in the hills and towards the beach, but the real city, the real grit is east and south. East along the concrete river that separates gritty downtown and ethnic, hard working communities southward to the port and the Pacific. Graffiti is the gritty color palette mixed with concrete whatever the color concrete is. The palm trees are just upside down exclamation marks in a city that basks in being upside down while pushing the grit farther away. It’s not all sunshine and beaches as some think. It’s crime, gritty crime, and plenty of it. From gritty alleys to not so gritty skyscrapers to suburban condos to beachfront chalets. The cops can’t keep up with this grit, and its pervasiveness.

This is the world of To Live and Die in L.A., our watch on this episode of What We Watch When We Drink. We picked this classic movie because of one its stars, the iconic Willem Dafoe, who by chance likes whisky and now has one with his name on it. And Laphroaig’s! The Willem Dafoe Limited Edition from Laproaig. A perfect combo for us for this episode. A neo-noir action thriller and Laproaig all tied together with a Dafoe bow.

Grab a whisky or a cold one, have a seat on the porch, watch the palm trees sway with the Santa Ana winds blowing the grit, freak as the cops zoom by on another chase, and dive into the latest gritty episode from the Boozedancing Entertainment Network.
