Ever have an absolutely stupendous idea that keeps you up all hours of the night burning brain cells, making you sweat, and ultimately separating you from money that surely would have had better uses like dinner at Nobu, a weekend in St. Tropez, a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder (less than 100 made), a new roof before the winter rains hit, a Topps Roberto Clemente rookie card, a tank of premium(!) gasoline, a birthday card for Mom, or a pet miniature giraffe, only to see said absolutely stupendous idea washed away by poor planning, a maxed out credit card, or finger-wagging know-it-all’s who are flummoxed by the hefty decision of the soup or the salad? It’s a daily occurrence here at Boozedancing. But we were fortunate enough to find someone who after spending countless hours of the night burning brain cells and ultimately money hit on something near and dear to her (and our) heart. Whisky!

Annabel Thomas — founder and CEO of Nc’nean Distillery in the farflungness of the Western Highlands of Scotland — is our guest on a very special episode of What We Watch When We Drink. We chatted all things award winning Nc’nean Single Malt from how to pronounce it (you have to listen to the episode, no spoilers!) to the dream becoming reality to how to get to the distillery at its quaint spot on the map without falling into the Sound of Mull to be eaten by sea monsters with incomprehensible Scottish accents or just being lost forever like on some mad reality show that throws you into nowhere and says, “Here’s a pack of matches, $17 in unmarked local currency, and three Kit-Kat bars. Go. We’ll see you in six weeks. Don’t forget to cry and look forlorn often, remember not to talk to the crew unless you’re willing to LOSE, and don’t look at the camera attached to the new Land Rover with it’s standard very nice heater and comfy reclining seats.”

Speaking of which, our Watch for the episode is Clarkson’s Farm, a reality show in its own right where Mr. TV himself, Jeremy Clarkson, learns the in’s and out’s of farming in The Cotswolds in England. It’s the classic story of a fish out of water on land which has to be plowed, seeded, watered, and harvested by a fish who can only drive sports cars and probably should be watching football on the telly and stay out of the sun.

Many thanks to Annabel for coming on and walking us through a lovely tasting of some very special Nc’nean whiskies. Special thanks also to Chris Maybin from Nc’nean who helped to get us together over three time zones and two continents. And once again, thank you to Sam Filmus and his team at ImpEx Beverages for providing us with the lovely Nc’nean whiskies to drink with Annabel!

We suggest downloading this episode wherever you get your podcasts and listen in the comfort of your forklift or John Deere combine harvester. Please do not operate heavy machinery while listening or sipping whisky.
