Whisky Review – Society Single Cask No. 123.5, Feisty But Fun

“To Leave No Nose Unturned”

Official Motto of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottlings are always a bit of a mystery. A pretty bottle, an amusing title, playful tasting notes, some vital stats (i.e. ABV, age statement, barrel type), and their guarantee that the whisky in the bottle came from a single cask.  So what’s missing? The distillery’s name! According to our friends at Whisky Connosr, 123.5 was distilled by Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Distillery. Is this information accurate? Does it really matter? I doubt it. Is this whisky any good? That’s what we’re here to find out. Here are the vital stats for this whisky: 60.8% ABV, aged for 8 years in port wine casks.

  • Color: Deep amber/clover honey.
  • Aroma: There’s a strong alcohol sting which is immediately followed by toffee, pipe tobacco, and port wine.
  • Taste: Without water, the spiciness is very overpowering, which makes it difficult to pick up much else. Adding a good slosh of water really opens up the flavor palate. Though the spice is still there, other flavors start to come through, namely maple syrup, cinnamon, and caramel.

Feisty but fun… they weren’t kidding! I would never describe this as an easy drinking whisky. It has big, bold flavors which are typical of a young Single Malt. If you’ve read my past whisky reviews, you’ll know that I like a whisky with a bit of fight left in, because we could all use a good ass kicking every once in a while to help keep us in line. I give this whisky a B+.
