Holmes Cay Single Origin Reunion Island Rum Review

We have had the good fortune of reviewing three very different Holmes Cay Rum expressions over the past couple years. When most of us think Rum, we think the Caribbean, but as we’ve learned, Rum, much like whisky, can be made anywhere.

The two Holmes Cay Rums that we’ll be discussing on today’s video come from Distillerie De Savanna which is located on Reunion Island, a tropical island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar. Here is a bit more information about these spirits taken directly from a recent press release that landed in our inbox:

Réunion Island Agricole Rum is made from fresh pressed cane juice distilled on a Savalle copper column still and bottled unaged at 50% alcohol by volume.

Réunion Island Grand Arôme Rum is a molasses high ester expression produced after a ten day fermentation period. Also distilled on the Savalle copper column still, it is bottled unaged at 57.5% alcohol by volume.

Thanks to our very positive experiences with Holmes Cay’s Rum expressions, we went into this tasting with a healthy dose of optimism which is very unusual for cynical bastards such as ourselves. To find out if our expectations were met, click play on the following video:

This is all I needed to know to make a purchase decision. It’s hard to find rhum agricole in my area of New Jersey. I am slowly sipping through a bottle of Rhum Damoiseau that I “liberated” from my brother’s liquor cabinet. But soon, it will be gone.
