So we took a look on the Merriam-Webster website for the definition of “squall”. Here’s what we found:
- Squall as a noun: “A sudden violent wind often with rain or snow” or “a short-lived commotion”.
- Squall as a verb: “To cry out raucously” or “to utter in a strident voice”.
And here’s what the pride of Milton, DE, aka Dogfish Head Brewery, has to say about the beer that we’ll be reviewing on today’s video which goes by the name Hazy Squall IPA:
“Brace yourselves … there’s a Hazy Squall coming! The perfect storm of our original Squall IPA and a new juicy IPA, Hazy Squall is continually hopped with cascade, and dry-hopped with a luscious hop blend to form a tropical citrus tempest. With flavors of orange creamsicle and pineapple that are balanced by a low bitterness, every sip of Hazy Squall will have you chasing your next adventure!”
So we’re thinking that the use of word “squall” in the name of this beer is both a noun and a verb. The hope is that this beer will assault your taste buds with that “tropical citrus tempest” and then your taste buds will “cry out raucously” at the sheer joy that they’re experiencing. Did any of that happen when we sampled this beer? Click play on the following video to find out:

I grew up in the Anglophone Caribbean, where the term “squall” was used regularly. Squalls are brief yet powerful tropical storms with heavy rain, sudden wind shifts, and strong wind gusts capable of causing severe damage.
