Bacon Bourbon Cocktails. The Bacon Explosion. Chocolate Covered Bacon. Bacon Brownies. It seems Americans can’t get enough bacon in their diet!
Thanks to the bakers at Voodoo Doughnut and the brewers at Rogue Ales, we will soon have the Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Porter. This beer will be released in 750 ml bottles and will be made with apple wood smoked bacon, vanilla beans, and maple syrup.
So what do you think? Will this beer taste like a fine dessert in a glass, or will it be an absolute nightmare? Take our first ever poll and tell us what you think!

I buy 2 at first just in case I like it and they run out. If it is good, i’ll be getting more. I wonder if it has aging potential?

Yo Max!
I think it will be a relatively low ABV, so I don’t think you can age this one. But you have greater expertise in this arena, so I defer to your wisdom.
Cheers!

You’re probably right (I was hoping it would have a high ABV). I’ll still be looking to pick up a few.

I just got my 2 bottles! OK, who has the “waffles” to try it with me?

I’m on the fence about it. Sounds intriguing, but it could also be nasty. Only one way to find out…

Personally I think that the whole bacon infatuation has gone far enough. Sure, it’s tasty, but I don’t need it in my beer. Or my chocolate for that matter. Or gumballs, hot sauce, lip balm, mints, or lollipops. These are all real products.

It’s all about the execution. In the right hands, even the weirdest ingredient combinations can be made to work together.

Is this going to be available outside the NW?

Good question. It sounds like a pretty Portland-centric product, so you never know how far they will distribute it.

I would absolutely try it – a couple of the Rauchbiers I’ve tried come across as being very bacon-y, so the concept of using actual bacon doesn’t seem completely nuts to me. I’d almost be more worried about how sweet it could get from the maple.
Knowing Rogue, it’ll either be sublime or a hot mess. They don’t have much that falls in the middle in my experience.
Here’s to crossing my fingers we get some in Kansas and you guys get some in Jersey so that we can all try it out!

I know what you mean about Rogue. They make some good stuff, but they have a few duds too. But hey, at least they try!
I’m not sure when this is getting released, but if I happen to stumble upon it, I will definitely pick up a bottle. Should be amusing to compare notes.

I sooooo want to try this. I definitely don’t want to buy an entire 6-pack, but just a taste or a bottle would make my day.

Not sure how I feel about this concept. I suppose it could be interesting. If the price is right, I’ll definitely give it a try.

I would absolutely try it, I just question whether Rogue can pull it off. I can see a brewery like Southern Tier turning this into a spectacular dessert beer, or pick another great Portland brewery, like Hair of the Dog – but Rogue? I hope they prove me wrong – I love the concept.

I gotta say, I’m not 100% on the combination. I mean, I’m sorta quoting Jim Gaffigan on this one- “maple, good. bacon, better. beer, great! maple bacon beer, piece of crap.” Though, there have been odder things on the market before (ie gravy flavored soda, those Harry Potter jelly beans, deep-fried thanksgiving balls on a stick, etc), so who knows if this will be any good… I’m not willing to buy a whole beer, when it comes out, but for the purposes of killing the curious cat, I’m willing to try a sip.

That sounds so insanely terrible that it can but loop all the way around back into awesome again! Of course there is no chance it will make it this side of the pond so when you get your hands on one you could tell me anything and I would have to believe you.
Darn bloody ocean in the way.

Ah well, you have oodles of fine beverages on your side of the pond that most of us can only dream of, i.e. a plethora of Single Malts and hard to find UK beers. We’ll be sure to write it up if we happen to come across a bottle.
