If you’re interested in expanding your whisky repertoire without having to buy full bottles of something you may be on the fence about, minis are definitely the way to go. And if you want to try different expressions from the same brand, then holiday time (ie Christmas) is when you should be on the hunt because that’s when sample packs are in abundance.
The Johnnie Walker Gold that we’ll be discussing today was part of a five whisky sample pack that was purchased a Christmas or two ago. Here are a few words about this whisky taken directly from the Johnnie Walker website:
Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve is a whisky that plays nicely with others but always holds its own. This award-winning Scotch is made from whiskies chosen for their sweet, honeyed qualities. We select them when they’re at their most vibrant for vivid flavor in every mouthful.
For those of you that aren’t in the know re: the geekery of aged spirits, when Johnnie Walker plasters 18 years old on their blended whisky bottled, that means that the youngest whisky used in said blend is at least 18 years old and the odds are pretty good that there are much older whiskies used. Does older always mean better when it comes to aged spirits? Not necessarily. Is Johnnie Walker Gold any good? Click play on the following video to find out:
