The Craft Beer Revolution may not be televised, but it will certainly be photographed…
Thanks to Twitter, Untappd, Facebook, Instagram, and all of the excellent beer blogs out there, photographing and sharing photos of beer has never been easier. For those of you that have never bothered to pour your beer into a glass, you are missing out on at least two thirds of the Craft Beer drinking experience (The sights! The sounds! The aromas!). While it’s perfectly “acceptable” to drink your Bud/Miller/Coors out of the packaging that it came in (they all look and smell very similar after all), Craft Beer deserves better treatment! Thankfully, there are a plethora of people out there treating Craft Beer with the respect that it deserves.
Several months ago, I stumbled upon a blog called Beertography. Since March of 2009, John Kleinchester, the man behind Beertography, has been featuring articles and photographs of “beer and beer related things” on his blog. While most of the photographs are his, he will occasionally feature Beertography by other Craft Beer enthusiasts (he has featured our Victory Prima Pils and Lost Abbey Red Barn Saison photos on his blog), and will also run Beertography contests for various Breweries and Craft Beer organizations.

I really do need to get back on instagram, consider this a warning of my impending return. I am constantly in awe at some of the beer photography out there (for example: Wayne Cardosi on untappd uploads pics that are amaze-balls) and I have tried to “up my game” so to speak.

Thanks for this post. This is an area I sorely need to improve in my blog. All my photography chops got left behind with film (translated – I haven’t bought a nice digital camera yet) and I was more landscapes and locale photography, not beer cans and glasses.
I look forward to checking out the sites you’ve included.

I resisted digital photography for a long long time. While I miss the surprises that come with conventional film photography, I absolutely love the speed and convenience of digital. All good fun!

Cool post – and nice shout-out to John & Beertography. That site alone has made me think (sometimes) entirely too long and hard) about interesting ways to frame and photograph beer.

Thank you G-LO! I love your picture of the Port Brewing Shark Attack – I haven’t yet figured out taking pictures in darker light. A useful skill as most pubs aren’t brightly lit eh?
I also do enjoy It’s a Fucking Beer’s (itsafuckingbeer.com) photography. He usually sticks with the “beer + glass” setup, but they’re still pleasing to look at, and his captions always make me chuckle.

As far as low light photography goes, I really can’t take any credit for the technical aspects. It’s all about the low light capabilities of the iPhone. It has a seriously nice lens. I will take credit for the filter choices and composition though. All about creative choices. I occasionally make good ones.

When you have Lego obsessed little boys in the house, you tend to get inundated with those little guys. They are everywhere! It’s a good thing that I too like the Legos. Hope to find more creative uses for them in future photos.
