As most of you are well aware, we are big fans of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society of America, and have attended the last five Fall Extravaganza events in Philadelphia. Two days ago, I received an email from the Society announcing their Spring 2012 events lineup. Below is some general information from the Society about the Spring 2012 events, as well as a promotional code that will save you some money on the cost of admission:
Ladies and Gentlemen are cordially invited to enjoy a connoisseur’s evening featuring rare and exceptional Single Malt Scotch and unique whiskies from around the world. The evening includes a delicious dinner buffet as well as a selection of premium imported cigars for our guests’ later enjoyment. The Single Malt & Scotch Whisky Extravaganza brings the discerning enthusiast the opportunity to sample the participating whiskies in a sophisticated and elegant environment with genuine camaraderie and knowledgeable representatives from each participating distillery.
All events run from 7pm to 9pm. Registration begins at 7pm. The dress code is business casual, jackets preferred. No denim or athletic attire.
Special rates for groups of 8 or more.

Members tickets to the Extravaganza are $135.00 each (for the first two) and non-member guest tickets are $150.00 each. It's just the booze dancing... 
All of the new york events are always so expensive. There was the bourbon bbq fest here a couple of weeks ago and we decided to attend the one in Virginia in June, because its 35 per person instead of 125 and there are triple the vendors. Anyway, not being a huge fan of scotch I’d be hardpressed to attend this function, but I wish you guys all the best, and depending on your schedules, maybe we can set something up at a less costly (i spend all my free money on hooch!) locale. either way, have fun bdcrew!

I can’t believe it. You guys might actually make it up here and I will be the one to miss it!?! Shameful! I’ll be spreading the good word of whisky in Northern Cali then…. which is exciting but I’m bummed I’ll miss this event and the BDC’s NYC adventures!

Well that sucks! On the bright side, if our plan to make this a South Jersey to NYC to South Jersey trip in the same day are successful (i.e. we live to tell the tale), then that will motivate us to do the day trip thing to NYC whisky events more often and with much less hesitation. Keep your fingers crossed! When do you head to California?

Ok – I like it! I’ll bet those odds AND cross my fingers!
I leave for California May 1 and stay on the west cost till about May 18th … only coming home to move apartments (ug). Funny enough I’m totally fine with the furniture, clothes, etc but it’s the moving of my now over 100+ bottle whisky collection that scares me most! lol. Will be an interesting month for sure.
Can’t wait to read your review of the SMWS NYC event and the adventures in travel! Pack lots of water and Tylenol. 🙂

I’d say 2.5 weeks in Northern California is a pretty good consolation prize for missing a Booze Dancing excursion to the Extravaganza.
Are you moving far? I’d offer up our help to move your whisky collection, but me thinks a few bottles would go missing between apartments. Heh
And as far as whisky related illness at the Extravaganza, after five such events, I think I may have learned the fine art of pacing myself. We have a semi system:
1 – Do a quick survey of the offerings and pick up any interesting swag.
2 – Go for the new and interesting first.
3 – Try the things you liked the first time again.
4 – During the last half hour, make the rounds once more and drink your moneys worth.
Of course food and water breaks are intertwined throughout the evenings festivities. And of course, a bottle of Advil will be at the ready.

That’s a PERFECT list! I respect your strategy. Here’s how I always try to approach the whisky events:
1) Scan the program – find the most obscure brands and go there first
2) Drink water
3) Walk the floor to find & try those bottles that are consistently out of my price budget
4) Drink water
5) Walk the floor again to find the people who I want to meet
6) Repeat.
My problem is that I talk to much so I never seem to make it all the way around the event – no matter the size! But wish me luck for Wednesday (WhiskyLive NY) I have an aggressive goal to master the malts! lol.
As for the move – luckily I’m just going around the corner … but I could understand how if I were to accept help – a bottle or two may not make it to the new place 😉

Sounds like you too have a sound Whisk(e)y Event strategy! Re: WhiskyLive!, I’m looking forward to your twitter commentary and post game wrap up on the blog. I will raise a glass (i.e. plastic cup) of Great Lakes Beer in your honor at Citizens Bank Park. Assuming we don’t get rained out of course.
Sadly, when confronted with 100+ bottles of whisk(e)y, my Sicilian-ness takes hold and I can’t resist the urge to skim some of the profits. It’s a curse I tell ya! Heh.
