Beer Review – Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA

Though I’ve had numerous varieties of IPAs over the past few years, it wasn’t until the Samuel Adams Latitude 48 Deconstructed 12-pack that I was finally able to learn a bit about the differences between various hop varieties. After a bit of discussion, we all agreed that the Simcoe hops were the most flavorful of the five hop varieties that we sampled, and this verdict prompted me to pick up a bottle of the Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA, which is brewed exclusively with Simcoe hops.

Let’s see what Weyerbacher can do with these very potent hops…

  • Appearance: Hazy, reddish orange color. Very little head that dissipates quickly.
  • Aroma: Hops all the way! Very floral. Lots of grapefruit.
  • Taste: Medium carbonation. Smooth creamy texture. Very little malt sweetness. Intense hop flavors from beginning to end. Strong bitter finish that lingers for quite awhile.
  • ABV: 9%

I’m not sure how I feel about the Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA. It was enjoyable overall, and it was definitely flavorful, but I can’t say that I loved it, or that I would go out of my way to track it down again. I think my lack of enthusiasm for this beer is due to it’s one dimensionality, i.e. hops, hops, and more hops. I love a hoppy beer, but I also like a few surprises along the way.

  1. I’ll agree with your assessment. I wouldn’t say I loved this beer but it wasn’t bad either. I think it lacked something in the mix that would round the taste out more.

    • Although it involved a Bro-code violation, I was lucky enough to get a wee taste of an unfiltered version of this beer during a Weyerbacher sponsored lunch at Jose Pistola’s this past Friday (Day 1 of Philly Beer Beek). It was straight from the firkin and I must admit, was a vast improvement over the filtered and bottled version that I had for this review. Perhaps I should track down the bottled and unfiltered version at some point and give this one a second try.

        • I can’t tell if you are being sarcastic or are just a little bit jealous that we didn’t invite you along. The Double Simcoe out of the Firkin (what a great word) was great as was the company. Sadly, I have brought G-Lo down to my level of service and that was apparently sorely lacking. At one point, I thought G-Lo might gnaw off a table leg but fortunately the food finally arrived.

          • You are correct. The quality of the service was sorely lacking. Though the bearded wonder was enthusiastic, I suspect that his marijuana usage might be taking a toll on his short term memory. He wasn’t too bright. I think a lunch hour manifesto for restaurants and patrons is in order. If you can’t get the food out quickly, then don’t serve lunch.

Sadly, there was no straw. Maybe next time.
