Beer Review – New Holland Full Circle Kölsch Style Beer

I was looking for something new to share with my fellow dancers and as the Wookie goes on and on about Kölsch style beer, I thought I would give this product from New Holland a try. From the New Holland site:

“Full Circle is a deceptively simple beer. Its made with a single malt, a single hop, and our single-minded approach to brewing: make the best. Period. The result is a beer light in body yet still rich with taste and character. Whether you’re a seasoned beer aficionado or new to hand-crafted brews, everyone can enjoy the smooth, surprising taste of Full Circle.”

I found the Full Circle to have the following characteristics.

  • Appearance: Light Yellow with a little haze and good foam and lacing.
  • Aroma: Mild roasted malt.
  • Taste: Very mild with a subtle sweetness and a nice finish.
  • ABV: 5.25%

This was a good beer. However, the beer is unfiltered so if you aren’t a fan of floaters you may want to steer clear of the Full Circle.

  1. This was a nice pick-up by LimpD. It’s a light refreshing summer brew that still has great character and flavor.

And LimpD is right I love Kölsch style brews. They are the perfect session brews when you don’t want something heavy. Besides Kölsch is just fun to say.

  2. Sounds like a good beer. I’ll have to try kolsch style. And I like unfiltered beer. Something about them appeal to me. Like they’re more traditional or something, haha.

  3. Love Kölsch’s. I’ve heard of New Holland but didn’t think I’d had their beer until the hubster said I’ve had the Dragon’s Milk at SAVOR (how does he remember these things???), so I looked up their website – http://newhollandbrew.com/ . Another great Michigan brewery AND distillery. Whisky, rum, Hopquila! Sounds like a Booze Dancer Road trip. Also some great beers – the Blue Sunday Sour has sparked my interest. Unfortunately, I don’t think they distribute in MD. Good thing we’re close to VA and PA.

  4. I’ve had Full Circle Kolsch a couple of times and after the second try I asked myself why I thought enough of it to give it another pour. Much like your observation, there just isn’t much going on. Their description as “deceptively simple” translates to “weak”. And as for floaters, there shouldn’t be any in a Kolsch – my guess is that you got a bad bottle/batch or it was stored improperly at the shop before adoption.

My favorite Kolsch is Reisdorf followed by Gaffel (both German). Unfortunately, prior to export they’re pasteurized so we don’t get to experience the bright flavors and subtleties intended by the brewers over there.

    • Gotta second the Monger (as much as it pains me to do it) on the Reisdorf Kölsch. One of the best I’ve had. Got a chance to try a non-export draft of Reisdorf at a German heritage event and it was fantastic.

  5. I like unfiltered, but I’m usually not a bit kolsch kind of girl. I’d give it a whirl if the temps outside were hot enough. 🙂

    • I’ve been rediscovering the Lager/Pilsner/Kolsch brews and I gotta admit, they are great for the warmer months. The Lancaster Brewing Kolsch and the Victory Prima Pils are particularly tasty. And if you want something with a bit more octane, then the Dogfish Head My Antonia is really good (an Imperial Pilsner).
