The Sixpoint Apollo was part of the mixed six pack purchase at Wine Works in Marlton, NJ that I mentioned during my Great Divide Nomad review from last week. Since I have been hearing and seeing a lot about this beer over the past couple months (it’s been all over Twitter and Instagram, and Mrs. G-LO managed to try it before me during one of her Frothy Friday excursions to Mrs. Alemonger’s house), I needed to find out what all the fuss was about.

Sixpoint Brewery has the following to say about their Apollo Summer Wheat:

The unmistakable flavor of a Bavarian Wheat, but with a clear golden brilliance and a Sixpoint twist. An entirely unique canned offering for the sun-worshipping ale lovers.

Here are my impressions of this beer…

• Appearance: Pale orange color. Little to no head and zero lacing. Lots of tiny, fast rising bubbles.
• Aroma: Big hit of clove when you take that first sniff, followed immediately by healthy dose of lemon zest.
• Taste: Medium carbonation with lots of fizzy bubbles. The mouthfeel reminds me of drinking seltzer water that has been sitting in a glass for a few minutes, i.e. not super fizzy, but definitely not flat. The spicy cloves hit you at first. From the middle to the end, it’s all tart and lemony with no bitterness. Tart and astringent finish that lingers for quite awhile. Very mouth puckering.
• ABV: 5.2%

The Sixpoint Apollo reminds me of the Ayinger Brau-Weisse Hefe Weizen, but with a lot more clove and lemony tartness. It has definite thirst quenching ability, and the sixteen ounce can makes it highly transportable and easy to share. Overall, I found this to be a very drinkable beer, but I didn’t love it. While I enjoyed the tartness, it may be a bit too heavy on the clove for my taste. Have you ever swallowed a whole piece of clove? If so, then you probably know what I’m talking about. Perhaps I need to revisit this one before reaching a final verdict.
